Summerseat is located to the North of Bury, Lancashire,
cascading down the sides of the Irwell Valley. With its
conservation area, the East Lancashire Railway Viaduct and
the spectacular Irwell Gollinrod Gorge, Summerseat's
history is not too unusual for the area.
First recorded in the 16th Century as an agricultural
settlement, by the final quarter of the 18th Century the
Industrial Revolution had arrived in the form of several
textile mills. These were built and remained in operation
until the middle of the 20th Century.
Nowadays, much of the village is designated as conservation
area, preserving several historically and architecturally
important buildings and areas.
The village is easily accessed by road, or by rail using
the Summerseat Station on the East Lancashire Railway.
